Diamond earrings are the most versatile fine jewellery purchase you can make. The Three Main Styles
Diamond Studs
The classic. A single diamond (or cluster) set directly on the ear. The most popular starting point for Indian buyers — understated, daily-friendly, versatile across all occasions. A pair of 0.30–0.50ct total weight studs can be worn from office to wedding with no adjustment.
Diamond Drop Earrings
A stone (or stones) that hang below the earlobe. More visual impact, more movement. Popular for occasions — weddings, receptions, festive events. Pairs beautifully with Indian ethnic wear.
Diamond Hoops
A circular or semi-circular frame set with diamonds. Modern, contemporary, increasingly popular with younger Indian women. Works well as a daily piece that's slightly more statement than a stud.
Grade Priorities Are Different for Earrings
This is where earring buying diverges from ring buying. Because earrings are viewed from 2–3 feet away — not held up close — the priority order changes:
- Cut: Still important for brilliance — Excellent or Very Good.
- Carat: Weight matters more for earrings than rings. Size reads at a distance; clarity doesn't.
- Colour: H–I is perfectly fine. You'll never notice the difference from across the room.
- Clarity: SI1 eye-clean is the smart choice for earrings. Nobody will ever see your inclusions. Save the VS2 premium for your ring.
A pair of 0.50ct total weight (0.25ct per ear), H colour, SI1 clarity, Excellent cut studs will look stunning. The same budget spent on VS2 clarity instead of SI1 buys you less size for the same appearance.
Total Weight vs. Per Stone Weight
When comparing diamond earrings, always check whether carat weight is quoted as total weight (TW) or per stone. A pair listed as "0.50ct" is typically 0.25ct per ear. "0.50ct per ear" means 1.00ct total.
This matters a lot for price comparison. Always ask for clarification if it's not stated — and check the IGI report (which is issued per stone, not per pair).
Setting Styles for Earrings
Prong / Claw Setting
Most diamond is visible, maximum light, maximum sparkle. Best for studs where you want the diamond to be the focus.
Bezel Setting
Metal rim around the stone. More secure — ideal if you're active or tend to lose earrings. Slightly less sparkle but cleaner, more modern look.
Pavé / Cluster
Multiple small diamonds set closely together to create the appearance of one larger stone. Great for getting more sparkle per rupee. Harder to verify individual diamond grades, so always buy from a certified source.
The Metal and Backing Question
For earrings, 18kt gold is the standard — light enough for comfort, strong enough for daily wear. Yellow gold is the classic Indian choice. White gold suits contemporary styles and western wear better.
Check the earring backing — push-back (friction) or screw-back. Screw-back is more secure, especially for higher-value studs. If you're buying for a child, butterfly/screw-back is essential.
