Buying a diamond is one of the most meaningful purchases you'll ever make — and the most confusing if nobody explains the rules. Walk into any jewellery store and you'll hear "4Cs" thrown around like common knowledge. This guide breaks it down so you understand exactly what you're paying for.
What Are the 4Cs?
The 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat — are the universal grading system developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and adopted by IGI and every major lab worldwide. They determine the quality, beauty, and price of any diamond.
1. Cut — The Most Important C
Cut is the only C that's entirely in the hands of the craftsman, and it has the greatest impact on how a diamond looks. A well-cut diamond reflects light brilliantly; a poorly cut one looks dull even if the other grades are high.
Cut is graded from Excellent → Very Good → Good → Fair → Poor. At My Carat, every diamond we stock is graded Very Good or Excellent — we won't carry anything below that.
Indian buyer tip: Don't let a seller distract you with a high carat weight if the cut grade is Fair or Poor. A 0.70ct Excellent cut stone will outshine a 1.00ct Fair cut stone every single time.
2. Colour — Less Is More
Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). D–F are colourless, G–J are near-colourless, K–M show a faint yellow tint.
For most Indian settings — especially yellow gold — a G or H colour is the sweet spot. It faces up white, and the premium over I or J doesn't justify the price jump for everyday wear.
Indian buyer tip: If you're setting in white gold or platinum, go G–H at minimum. In yellow gold, H–I is invisible to the naked eye and will save you 15–25% versus D–F.
3. Clarity — Eye-Clean Is the Goal
Clarity measures internal inclusions (crystals, feathers, clouds) and surface blemishes. The scale runs: FL → IF → VVS1 → VVS2 → VS1 → VS2 → SI1 → SI2 → I1 → I2 → I3.
A diamond graded VS2 or above is almost certainly eye-clean — meaning you cannot see inclusions without magnification. SI1 can be eye-clean too, but it requires checking the actual stone (which is why we share IGI reports for every piece).
Indian buyer tip: For earrings and pendants (viewed from a distance), SI1 eye-clean is perfectly fine and saves significant money. For engagement rings (held close, inspected daily), VS2 or better is worth it.
4. Carat — Weight, Not Size
Carat is a unit of weight: 1 carat = 0.2 grams. It's the easiest C to understand but the most misused one in marketing. A 1.00ct diamond is not twice as big as a 0.50ct — it's about 25% wider in diameter.
Price per carat jumps at certain "magic sizes" — 0.50ct, 0.70ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, 2.00ct — because demand clusters around round numbers. Choosing a 0.90ct stone instead of 1.00ct can save 20–30% with virtually no visible difference.
Indian buyer tip: If budget is a concern, go just under a magic size. A 0.95ct at VS2 / G / Excellent will look identical to a 1.00ct of the same grades but cost meaningfully less.
How the 4Cs Interact
The 4Cs don't exist in isolation — they trade off against each other. Here's a practical framework for Indian buyers by occasion:
- Engagement ring (daily wear, inspected closely): Prioritise Cut → Colour (G–H) → Clarity (VS2+) → then maximise Carat within budget.
- Diamond earrings (worn at distance): Cut → Carat (size matters more here) → Colour H–I → Clarity SI1 eye-clean.
- Pendant / necklace (viewed from 1–2 feet): Balanced approach — Cut + Carat first, Colour G–I, Clarity VS2–SI1.
Why an IGI Certificate Matters
Every diamond at My Carat comes with an IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificate — an independent document that certifies the exact 4C grades of your stone. No certificate means no accountability, and you have no way to verify what you're actually buying.
When you buy from My Carat, you get the IGI report number with your order so you can verify it directly on the IGI website. What the certificate says is what you get — nothing more, nothing less.
